MIDI Bug - System Reset on 0xFF message

I found a MIDI bug in Echon 6, firmware 1.0. When I connect Telepathic Instruments Orchid with 5-pin MIDI cable, change volume down on Orchid – this resets the Echon, it just turns off and turns on again. I’ve attached the screenshot from the MIDI monitor, so it looks like that Echon resets because of MIDI reset message (0xFF). I was able to reproduce this bug every time.

Thank you for the detailed report and the MIDI monitor screenshot, that made this very easy to track.

What’s happening is that the Orchid is sending indeed a MIDI System Reset message (0xFF) when its volume is changed. The ECHON 6 is incorrectly responding to that message with a full device reboot.
A 0xFF should only reset internal state such as notes and controllers, and should never cause a power cycle. We’ll have this fixed in an upcoming firmware update.

In the meantime, the quickest workaround is to filter System Real-Time messages between the two devices. If you have a DAW or a MIDI utility in your chain, blocking 0xFF there will prevent the reboot until the fix is available. It may also be worth reaching out to Telepathic Instruments to let them know, as other devices may respond similarly to the 0xFF message.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks again for the clear reproduction steps.

The firmware update will be announced here. (Planned for next week).
